Clean Downtown

About the Project

The Clean Downtown program operates 7 days a week to maintain 39 miles of downtown sidewalks and 140 boulevard medians and landscaped areas within the downtown freeway system:  Lodge to the west, I-375 to the east, I-75 to the north, and Jefferson Ave. and the Detroit River to the south.

The program has expanded (via contract) to include regular maintenance of the new Detroit RiverWalk and portions of the Midtown area.  Clean Downtown crews were also instrumental in helping to clean and restore landscaping on Belle Isle.

A crew of 60 uniformed workers from Goodwill Industries cleans streets from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, and for four hours a day on weekends.  Their duties include sweeping and power-washing sidewalks, clearing litter and removing graffiti, daily cleaning of 72 bus shelters, maintenance of 27 wayfinding kiosks, hardscape weed abatement, alley/gutter/doorway cleaning and landscaping maintenance.

Six trucks loaned by the Penske Corporation are outfitted with power washing equipment, tools and supplies.  These trucks are also used to deploy the crew to their work sites.  Three street sweeper machines are also used for the program.
